If you’re travelling in 2022, you will only need a valid biometric passport to enter Italy. However, if you’re planning a trip to Europe for 2023 or later, you can expect some border policy changes. The new European Travel Information and Authorization System (or ETIAS for short) is set to go live in 2025. After that point, it will be mandatory for all international travelers heading to Italy from Canada. It’s vital to note that the new ETIAS application will not replace the regular visa-issuing system. If you are planning to work or study during your time in Italy, or you wish to stay for longer than 90 days at a time, you will still need to apply for the appropriate visa through your local consulate.
Yes. After it becomes mandatory in 2023, an online ETIAS application will be required for all Canadian citizens who wish to travel to Italy or any other country in the Schengen area of Europe, regardless of age. Please refer to our homepage for a complete list of countries in the Schengen area.
Currently, a COVID vaccination passport or certificate is not required for travelers entering Italy. However, policies and procedures related to the COVID-19 pandemic may change quickly. We recommend following up on the current travel regulations prior to your departure.
The ETIAS visa waiver program is set to go live in 2025. There will be an initial grace period of at least six months that will help both travelers and border officials adjust to the new policies and procedures. Even so, the ETIAS application should facilitate a smooth travel experience for Canadian citizens travelling to Italy. It will be best to go ahead and fill out the online application, even if you’ll be travelling during the grace period
